Police are searching for a man who attacked and robbed a homeowners’ association president responding to a noise disturbance in a Fort Lauderdale complex.

Fort Lauderdale police said that on Nov. 4 at about 1:30 a.m., Arthur Burns, 61, was trying to quiet down a disturbance in the Villas of Lakeview complex at 5200 NW 31st Ave.

Police said that as Burns was talking to the people involved, a man came up behind him and punched him in the left side of his jaw, knocking him unconscious. While Burns was lying on the ground, police said, the attacker went through his pockets, stealing an iPhone. Surveillance cameras captured images of the attack.

"They kept on arguing and going on, and I said, 'If you guys don't stop, I'm going to call the police,' and I thought that was the end of it," Burns said. "So I was standing right back here, and I saw two people come out of the gate, and the next thing I know, I was getting knocked out. The guy that actually hit me, I never saw him until we looked at the film."

When Burns tried to get up, the man punched him twice in the face and then stomped on his head twice, Fort Lauderdale police said.

"I felt like I had been hit by a Mack truck," Burns said.

Police said that Burns was injured, but he refused to be taken to a hospital.

The robber is described as a black man who is about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 175 pounds with dreadlocks braided into multiple ponytails. He was wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.

Police said they are also looking for two other men involved in the incident.

Burns, a retired Army sergeant, said he believes the attack was random. He said he will continue to help his neighbors, but that at the first sign of a disturbance, he will call the police.

"What happened to me, if I don't take a stand and step up to the plate, it's going to happen to somebody else, because people who do that have no regard for human life," Burns said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
